Designed by Aivan and created in collaboration with synbio (synthetic biology) scientists, Korvaa is “the world’s first microbe grown headset”.

Comprised of fungal mycelia, fungi film and microbial bioplastics, the headset explores the design and functional possibilities of microbially grown materials.

“Synbio is a rapidly developing, disruptive technology that enables the design and engineering of new biological organisms, as well as the re-design of existing biological systems, for useful purposes,” explained Aivan. “Synthetic organisms can produce a variety of desired chemicals, materials, medicine or fuels from renewable raw materials, waste fractions and CO₂. This technology will have a paramount role in the transition from a fossil-based economy to a sustainable, circular bioeconomy.”

“For now, certain compromises had to be made,” said Aivan designer Saku Sysiö. “However, it’s a rapidly developing field of research and we’re excited to see what happens in this area in the next years, and the implications for various industries, how these materials are used.”

“This was certainly only a surface scratch into where biology-engineered materials are going, and what we can do with them in the future,” added Avian designer Thomas Tallqvist.
