As the fashion, beauty, and food industries continue to push their sustainability efforts to lower their carbon footprint, the design world is not far behind.

Designers from all around the globe are coming up with innovative ways to create more circular products, by turning discarded plastic into furniture and home accessories, to combat the growing waste problem.

Supernovas

A case in point is Supernovas, a rising Milan- and London-based company dedicated to creating eco-friendly furniture, stationery, and much more by transforming waste into 100% recycled and recyclable designs.

Supernovas houses a range of items crafted by various designers, architects, collectives, and trailblazers. In “Afterlife,” the furniture collection helmed by Dutch design studio ODD MATTER, includes benches and stackable containers that can be used for houseplants, as trashcans, bookcases, or even side tables. The hues featured in this range include more demure tones of midnight black and granite grey to vibrant pink and electric blue.

The lineup is made from recycled PE and PET goods such as water bottles, toys, gas, water pipes, and more. The products are made through a unique process that brings together different types of cutting-edge manufacturing techniques: rotomoulding, pressing, and 3D printing.

Over in “Volta,” designed by Paula Cademartori, the 3D-printed, multifunctional range highlights tableware and stationery products including phone stands, trays, document clips, pen holders, and flower vases.

These items are crafted from recycled plastic filaments (PETG). As with all Supernovas products, the PET bottle waste is shredded into pellets and turned into filaments with the addition of natural colours. The filaments are then reprocessed to create the final collection. Supernovas keeps all products 100% mono-material and always refrains from using glue to ensure their full recyclability.

What’s even more exciting is Supernovas offers its customers the chance to exchange, trade, or return their purchased products through its Streaming Service, a one-of-a-kind member’s program.

Through this service, items can be regenerated into something new rather than end up in our landfills. This program also ensures the unwanted materials never become waste again. The label also offers up a Buy Back Scheme, where the customer can receive 40% back of what they paid on an item as credit.

To further push its sustainable mission, Supernovas delivers its orders in flat packs with completely recycled and recyclable packaging.
