Rejoice! In Canada, a plant-based sandwich is now a permanent item on KFC’s menu.

The decision by KFC to add a plant-based sandwich to its menu indefinitely is credited to a pilot back in 2019 where Plant-Based KFC by Lightlife achieved overwhelming sales.

Samantha Redman, chief marketing officer at KFC Canada, says the pilot highlighted the insatiable demand for plant-based alternatives. “When we tested Plant-Based KFC by Lightlife late last year, we sold over a month’s worth of sandwiches in six hours Seeing the extraordinary demand for Plant-Based KFC, we worked quickly to bring these menu items to our restaurants across Canada.”

Produced in Canada by Lightlife, a company that specializes in vegetarian and vegan meat substitutes, the Plant-Based KFC patty is made of soy, wheat and fava beans.

Although the plant-based patty is cooked with a dedicated deep-fryer, KFC says that there is a chance the same canola oil is used between chicken and plant-based.

Dan Curtin, president of Greenleaf Foods, the parent company of Lightlife, said: “Lightlife is excited to continue on this journey with KFC, providing Canadians with plant-based foods that deliver on incredible taste and are more broadly available to consumers who know balance is essential to living well.”

In addition to the Plant-Based KFC sandwich, there will also be Plant-Based KFC Popcorn, only available for a limited time.
