Swedish fashion label Weekday has just launched a plant-based, limited edition collection called “Hemp Jeans Couture”.
Inspired by the “modern tree-hugger” (a conscious person with a holistic mindset and an aesthetic edge) the new unisex range comprises essential everyday items including a deconstructed boxy jean jacket, a pair of jeans, an ankle-length skirt, a T-shirt, a mini shirt, shorts, and a short-sleeved pullover hoodie.
Standouts from the lineup include the Mabel jacket with removable sleeves that can transform into a vest, along with the versatile laced plant-based jeans and woody skirt. Each item has been crafted from hemp-enhanced denim and plant dyes.
To elevate the collection, Weekday teamed up with tech startup Agraloop, a company known for transforming food crop waste, such as rice, corn, pineapple leaves, and banana trunks, into new fibre materials. For the “Hemp Jeans Couture” range, waste from oil-seed hemp production makes up the fabrics. The eco-friendly material requires less land, water, and pesticides than its cotton counterpart, and additionally enriches the soil as it grows.
Unlike the drab hemp clothing of the past, Weekday’s “Hemp Jeans Couture” collection pushes the fashion boundary with its sculptural shapes, exaggerated silhouettes, and functional lace detailing. In terms of colour palette, the items in the range are currently available in either white or ecru, while the brand plans to add indigo styles later on this year.
