Revo Foods is a Vienna-based food technology company dedicated to finding vegan alternatives to the seafood food items many of us love.

This past weekend, they unveiled their first-ever product range, a line of 3D printed, plant-based salmon.

Revo Foods’ inaugural product line includes two salmon-inspired products. The first is called Salmon with Attitude: The Smokey One, and it is meant to look and taste just like real smoked salmon. The second is Salmon with Attitude: The Creamy One, a spreadable smoked salmon paste or spread.

Both of Revo Foods’ new Salmon with Attitude products were developed using state-of-the-art 3D food printing technology that works to replicate the texture and appearance of real salmon.

In order to bring their Salmon with Attitude line to life, Revo Foods identified the ingredients that separated good smoked salmon from fantastic smoked salmon. They then sought to recreate the taste using plant-based ingredients. The ingredients used were all high quality and included pea protein (a good source of protein and it can be harvested locally in Europe for minimal environmental impact), algae extracts (chock full of healthy vitamins and amino acids), plant oils (an anti-inflammatory and a source of nutritious fatty acids), and finally citrus fibres (which contain fibre that helps with digestions and lowers one’s risk of cardiovascular disease).

These high-quality, plant-based ingredients, combined with Revo Foods’ patented 3D food technology, is what led to the creation of the Salmon with Attitude product range.

In addition to being vegan, both The Smokey One and The Creamy One are actually healthier and more nutritious than real salmon. Revo Foods claims that their plant-based salmon contains more protein, omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fibres, and vitamin B12 than regular salmon. Plus, Revo Foods’ salmon products are free from the toxic waste that often manages to make its way into the salmon we eat.

Why is Revo Foods so passionate about finding plant-based solutions to the seafood industry? They see it as their personal mission to combat overfishing, to stop the never-ending destruction of the ocean, and to stop people from consuming seafood that so often contains toxic waste such as mercury or PCBS. Revo Foods wholeheartedly believes that a drastic transformation of the food system is necessary in order to preserve our planet, and they want to spearhead that change using their 3D technology to create plant-based versions of our favourite non-vegan foods.

Revo Foods’ website has few details as to when their Salmon with Attitude line will be available to the wider public, other than that it will first be sold in Austria in 2021 before expanding to more European markets soon thereafter.
