Together with material sciences company Recover, fashion company DL1961 has introduced a new capsule that takes recycled denim to the next level.

The five-piece capsule, which comprises the styles Rachel Flare, Emilie Straight, Hepburn Wide Leg, Bridget Boot and Patti Straight, are all made from post-consumer textile waste.

According to statistics by the Environmental Protection Agency, an average US citizen tosses roughly 70 pounds of clothing and textiles annually, with only 15% of it being recycled. DL1961 cites this alarming fact to be the main contributing factor towards their decision of championing a circular denim manufacturing process.

To bring the capsule to life, DL1961 opened what they claim is the largest textile recycling plant in Asia. After collecting and breaking down old garments, Recover comes into the picture to convert the post-consumer material into recycled fibres that are said to be better for the environment than organic cotton.

Next, the recycled fibres are weaved together with bio-based cellulose fibres Modal and Tencel for stretch, softness and comfort. Finally, it is finished with laser and ozone tech to recreate an “authentic denim look” without the need for water or harmful chemicals.
