Back in 2021, Waterfront Toronto launched an international competition for the design and development of the Quayside. Spanning 4.9 hectares (12 acres), the Quayside site is undeveloped land along Lake Ontario that is in close proximity to Toronto’s downtown core.

Among the competition, Alison Brooks Architects, Adjaye Associates, Henning Larsen and SLA were selected. The aim of the architectural firms alongside developers Dream Unlimited and Great Gulf will be to build an all-electric, zero-carbon community that features mass timber buildings with 800 affordable housing units in addition to 8,000 square metres of green space, an urban farm, arts venues and educational spaces.

Previously, Google’s Sidewalk Labs was set to develop the Quayside into a smart city but abruptly cancelled with the excuse being COVID-19 and the resulting economic uncertainty.
