Fargo, Net-Zero Energy Front yard

Fargo, a stunning residence nestled in the heart of Louisville, Colorado, stands as a testament to the seamless integration of sustainability and modern design. Designed by DAJ Design for a former high-level design engineer at Apple, this unique project presented numerous challenges due to its narrow site and the desire to achieve net-zero energy consumption.

However, through innovative design solutions and the incorporation of renewable energy systems, Fargo has emerged as a pioneering property, setting a new standard for sustainable living in the city.

A Harmonious Blend of Modern Aesthetics and Historical Context

Fargo effortlessly blends into the historical neighbourhood while embracing its modern aesthetic. Despite the site’s narrow nature, the design team skillfully integrated key design elements, including a detached studio garage and an indoor-outdoor kitchen, which were essential to the client’s vision.

By skillfully navigating the spatial constraints, Fargo manages to stand out without overwhelming the pedestrian experience, preserving the neighbourhood’s charm and character.

Optimizing Outdoor Space

Maximizing the use of outdoor space was a crucial aspect of Fargo’s design. The narrow site called for creative solutions, resulting in the absence of a traditional lawn. Instead, the design team focused on opening up the house to the exterior while ensuring privacy and a welcoming ambiance.

The front porch, with its welded wire steel and laser-cut steel panels, provides a sense of seclusion while maintaining visual accessibility. This, along with a spacious rear deck, featuring bi-folding windows and doors, offers a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor living, all while providing ventilation and unobstructed natural views.

Harnessing Renewable Energy

Fargo capitalizes on its east-west orientation to flood the interiors with natural light and warmth. Additionally, the roof of the upper level is adorned with a carefully arranged array of photovoltaic panels, harnessing solar energy to power the home. This on-site solar power generation not only reduces dependence on grid electricity but also contributes to a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Furthermore, Fargo utilizes a ground-source geothermal heat pump system to meet its heating and cooling requirements. This innovative system taps into the Earth’s stable temperature, providing efficient climate control while minimizing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

A Net-Zero Energy Milestone

Through the integration of solar power and geothermal energy systems, Fargo has achieved an extraordinary feat. It proudly stands as the first fully electrified and net-zero property in the city of Louisville. By eliminating reliance on natural gas distribution and operating solely on renewable energy, Fargo exemplifies a commitment to sustainability, paving the way for a greener future.

The project serves as an inspiration to homeowners and designers alike, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of embracing renewable energy technologies.
