Known for creating seasonal collections filled with eco-friendly materials and vegan leather, budding sustainable label Nanushka is now expanding its lineup to include eyewear.
To kick off Spring/Summer 2021, Nanushka’s creative director, Sandra Sandor, has unveiled a lineup of chic unisex silhouettes varying from D-, Square-, and Oval-frames to cat-eye and oversized options. Each functional and stylish frame arrives in subtle hues of black and transparent brown to more eye-catching variants dressed in transparent champagne, tortoiseshell, and a grey leopard print.
With sustainability at the forefront of this collection, the sunglasses’ frames are cast from 68% bio-based plastic sourced from both natural and renewable materials.
After years of wear, the frames will be able to biodegrade in a composting environment, and in a much short time than their plastic counterparts. The lenses are also bio-based and comprise 39% natural and renewable resources such as castor oil. Elevating the sunglasses is gold-tone hardware found at each temple.
Additionally, each pair of sunglasses arrive in a pouch made from deadstock supplies of Nanushka’s signature cruelty-free vegan leather. Even the cleaning cloth is made from 100% GRS-certified recycled polyester. By using bio-based materials, Nanushka is able to lessen the impacts related to fossil fuel extraction and production, along with reducing its CO2 emissions.
“It was only natural that we would expand the Nanushka world to incorporate sunglasses,” says Sandor. “Sunglasses led me to think about ideas around anonymity, a timely discourse in an age when we all wear masks. It started a consideration of what we reveal and what we conceal that the brand will explore more boldly in upcoming collections.”
