According to a report by Newzoo, the number of smartphone users globally will exceed 3 billion by 2018 and is projected to reach 3.8 billion by the end of 2021. With smartphone use on the rise, a tech company called Light has decided to take an alternative route and is currently developing a minimalist phone called Light Phone 2.
First releasing the original version of the Light Phone back in January 2017, the Light Phone was a 2G limited to just 9-speed dials. With the improved Light Phone 2, the phone will have 4G LTE, an E-Ink touchscreen instead of a 10-digit number pad, and it will be equipped with the bare essentials of what defines a phone such as calling, texting and adding contacts.
“By allowing you to leave behind your smartphone, it encourages you to spend quality time doing the things you love the most, free of distraction,” said Light in a statement. “Disconnecting is profound in a time when we have become so accustom to our existence only through hyper-connectivity.”
Light is also considering features such as an alarm clock, weather forecast, calculator, music playlists and maps.
Currently available for pre-order, the Light Phone 2 is priced at $300 USD + shipping and is set to be delivered by April 2019.
