Confusing and tumultuous are two words that may come to mind when recalling your pubescent years. If the process of puberty also included menstruation, then period shaming was likely an unwelcome part of these formative years.
Unfortunately, period shame is still very prevalent in our society, and its effects are even more pronounced for young people going through puberty. These feelings of shame and embarrassment are shared by almost 60% of women, according to new research, and can prevent women from taking part in activities as mundane as going for an early morning run.
Blume is working to replace these negative feelings by empowering young women as they navigate puberty and beyond. Co-founded by sisters Taran and Bunny in 2016, Blume creates natural and cruelty-free products for women. Organic pads and tampons mean that women can reduce the amount of plastic they use while menstruating, while the efficacy of their reusable heat packs is evidenced by the fact that they sell out so often.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of their ‘First Period Starter Kit’ is a deck of conversation cards that provides young girls with the tools they need to have important discussions about self-care. These conversations are continued on their blog, where you can find information about endometriosis or an article confirming that healthy skin can, in fact, take on many different forms. Young girls who use these cards are armed with the information they need to make it through puberty unscathed and can even show their peers how to do the same.
According to Blume, self-care should extend to skin and body care. Women of all ages have sworn by their unscented, probiotic deodorant, while their range of skincare products targets common concerns such as acne and dryness.
On top of it all, Blume’s packaging is 100% recyclable with their bottles, jars and pumps made of either glass or plastic that is Plastic Neutral Certified. The cardboard used for shipping is made from post-consumer recycled cardboard, while the paper is FSC Certified.
