In the bustling heart of Manhattan’s iconic Soho district, where art, culture, and fashion converge, there’s a hidden treasure that fashion enthusiasts and design aficionados can’t resist.
Acne Studios‘ store at 33 Greene Street has emerged as a beacon of creativity and sophistication within this dynamic neighbourhood. This store transformation is a testament to the Swedish fashion house’s unwavering commitment to design innovation and individuality.
A Global Vision with Individual Flair
Acne Studios has built a reputation for its unique approach to retail spaces. With stores worldwide, each location takes on a distinct character while remaining rooted in the brand’s global ethos. This concept shines brightly in the Greene Street store, where the fashion house’s signature design language is given a new interpretation.
The Architects Behind the Vision
The reimagined Greene Street store is the result of a collaboration between Acne Studios and Arquitectura-G, a Barcelona-based studio. The lead was taken by Jonny Johansson, Acne Studios’ Creative Director, whose vision shaped the aesthetic of the new space. The goal was to create a design that blended transparency and precision, sharp angles with subtlety, and an atmosphere that radiates sophistication.
Translucent Beauty
What immediately captures the attention of visitors is the innovative use of translucent glass panels. These panels serve a dual purpose – they create an artificial landscape and delineate the store’s graphic layout. The large triangular fitting rooms crafted from these panels are not just functional but also visually stunning. This play with translucency and angles imparts a sense of space and a futuristic appeal to the store’s design.
A Soothing Palette
In contrast to the sharp angles of the glass panels, the floor adopts a softer tone, mirroring the colour of glass. This colour is carried throughout the store’s elements, fostering a tranquil and uniform atmosphere that contrasts with the bustling streets of Soho. The use of colour in this way is not merely decorative; it’s a conscious design choice that creates a calming shopping environment.
Customized Luxury
The attention to detail at the Greene Street store extends to its flooring. The wall-to-wall carpeting is made from 100% tufted wool and is custom-designed by Kasthall, a Swedish rug and textile flooring company. This partnership underlines Acne Studios’ commitment to craftsmanship and quality.
Illuminating the Space
For the lighting design, Acne Studios enlisted the talents of French designer Benoit Lalloz, a long-time collaborator. Lalloz’s lighting design follows the lines of the ceiling, enhancing the store’s previously industrial character, thus paying homage to the historical ambiance of the Soho neighbourhood.
