At the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, IBM has unveiled the world’s first quantum computing system for scientific and commercial use.

Called IBM Q System One, the quantum computer was developed by a team of IBM industrial designers, scientists and systems engineers in collaboration with Italian manufacturer Goppion, U.K. design studios Map Project Office and Universal Design Studio.

By utilizing the quantum computer, various industries will be enabled to harness the power of quantum bits to compute problems that are “too complex and exponential in nature for classical systems to handle”.

Although very capable, the quantum bits are delicate and prone to reduction in their quantum properties due to various factors such as electromagnetic environments, vibrations, and temperature fluctuations. By enclosing the IBM Q System One with a half-inch-thick borosilicate glass that measures 2.7 meters (nine feet) tall, the airtight environment will stabilize the quantum bits.

“The IBM Q System One is a major step forward in the commercialization of quantum computing,” said Arvind Krishna, the senior vice president of Hybrid Cloud and director of IBM Research. “This new system is critical in expanding quantum computing beyond the walls of the research lab as we work to develop practical quantum applications for business and science.”

Additionally, IBM will be opening the IBM Q Quantum Computation Center this year in Poughkeepsie, New York, to serve their commercial clients part of the IBM Q Network commercial quantum computing program. Once completed, the center will house the world’s most advanced cloud-based quantum computing systems.

Described as “a worldwide community of leading Fortune 500 companies, startups, academic institutions, and national research labs”, members of the IBM Q Network will have access to the IBM Q System One and other various resources.
