Commissioned by the Nobel Peace Center, architecture and design practice Snøhetta‘s installation titled The Best Weapon is described as being “a symbol of diplomacy and dialogue”.
The Best Weapon is titled after Nelson Mandela’s quote, “The best weapon is to sit down and talk”.
Currently presented at the UN Headquarters Plaza in New York City, the installation encourages all to take a seat and engage in discourse.
“The Best Weapon delivers a message of peace and conflict resolution, both as a functional piece that encourages conversation and social intimacy, and as a resilient symbol that anchors the Peace Center’s mission for discourse and peace,” said Snøhetta. “The installation pays tribute to past Nobel Peace Prize laureates and their efforts to bring people together to find effective solutions for peace.”
Created in partnership with Hydro and Vestre, the installation measuring 6.5 metres long is made from “the world’s greenest” anodized aluminum that features a significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions when compared to the industry standard. In addition, the anodized finish provides corrosion resistance and scratch protection.
The production process of The Best Weapon is also carbon-neutral.
After October 15, the installation will be relocated from the UN Headquarters Plaza to its permanent location near the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway.
