With the purpose of “giving back to the ocean”, a lifestyle brand and social enterprise called SLO active is sustainably creating women’s swimwear made from plant-based and renewable materials.

Founded by New Zealand-born Janaya Wilkins, the name SLO is inspired by the slow fashion movement.

“Taking time to be in the moment and being conscious of our environment. By slowing down from our fast moving consumer habits, we can help the fight against plastic pollution and many other issues facing our planet,” said SLO active. “We believe the environmental crisis has reached a critical tipping point: the globalised mass production of goods and fast fashion, has dark consequences on the environment and workers in the supply chain. Once we are aware of the consequences we have a choice. Slow fashion is the only way forward.”

“The word ‘active’ in our name is there for a reason: it goes beyond the keyboard,” added SLO active. “Activism for the ocean. For the active woman – both in the ocean and for the ocean. Who is active on land, in her community, and active for the environment.”

Handmade in Italy, SLO active’s swimwear features durable and elastic properties. With contoured panels, flatlock seams and detailed finishings, the swimwear is made from a Forest Stewardship Council (FCS) certified neoprene alternative called Yulex Pure and lined with a 100% recycled polyester jersey. Sustainability sourced from hevea trees, Yulex Pure is a 100% plant-based natural rubber.

Alongside a solution-based dye that uses 75% less water than conventional dyeing, a water-based glue for laminating is used.

Available for purchase online, the swimwear is shipped with recycled and compostable packaging. Additionally, the hang tags are made from recycled T-shirt off-cuts.

Our oceans are in crisis because of humans’ mindless over consumption and a ‘disposable’ mentality,” said SLO active. “The consequences of mass production on the environment and people has defined how SLO active is as a brand.”

For each swimwear sold, SLO active donates to an ocean charity partner of the customer’s choice. A tree is also planted for each piece made.
