Created by designer duo Jihee Moon and Hyein Hailey Choi of Newtab-22, Sea Stone, a zero-waste project, utilizes seashells to make a material that visually resembles cement.
According to Newtab-22, seven million tons of seashells are discarded every year with the majority ending up in the landfill. Rather than wasting the by-product material, it is repurposed into Sea Stone.
Featuring physical properties similar to plastic, the material is natural, non-toxic, and sustainable.
“We are interested in natural, new or overlooked materials,” said Newtab-22. “We seeks the beneficial and intriguing properties of the materials, trying to bring into the modern life with our design. Our outcomes aim to critical approaches to sustainability and the significance into society.”
