After debuting their most sustainable jeans earlier this summer, American denim purveyor Levi’s has now launched its first-ever buyback program aptly named SecondHand.

The new initiative aims to encourage customers to rethink their shopping habits to help save the planet and will allow people to sell their old jeans, worn denim, and unwanted Levi’s items for a gift card towards a future purchase. Additionally, the program will help keep coveted pieces in circulation and hard to find items from going into a landfill.

According to research from the brand, purchasing a used pair of Levi’s will save approximately 80 percent of CO2 gas emissions and 700 grams of waste compared to buying a new pair of jeans. Even just extending a garment’s life by nine months can reduce its carbon waste and water footprint by 20 to 30 percent.

The SecondHand program is simple. Customers can take their used items to participating Levi’s stores across America, and depending on the item’s age, condition, and original retail price, the sustainable program will offer between $5 to $35 USD ($7 to $47 CAD) in credit.

The most valuable trade-ins are items from Premium Levi’s collections and pieces that were made more than 20 years ago. For clothing that is too worn out to resell, Levi’s will still offer its customers a $5 USD/$7 CAD gift card and will donate or dispose of the item for you.

All pre-loved items will be professionally cleaned, sorted, and then put up for sale on the SecondHand marketplace. Here customers can directly purchase the recirculated clothing. Each item will be priced affordably, ranging from $30 to $150 USD ($40 to $200 CAD).
