Emmy award-winning actress and women’s rights activist Kerry Washington is taking a stand on female empowerment, having recently joined forces with New York City-based jewellery brand Aurate on a Lioness-inspired collection.
The direct-to-consumer and sustainable fine jewellery label was founded by Sophie Kahn and Bouchra Ezzahraoui five years ago. Since then, the duo has aimed to create fine jewellery pieces by women, for women. A few years later in 2017, the two met Washington, which was the catalyst for this new partnership. Along with the collaborative range, Washington has also invested in the female-founded brand.
The seven-piece Aurate x Kerry Washington Lioness collection is handmade out of 100% recycled gold and draws on the Egyptian iconography of the goddess Sekhmet, who is often depicted as having a women’s body and a lion’s head. Sekhmet is also a universal symbol that represents healing, fierceness, and feminine power; all these traits are seen perfectly immortalized in the range.
Additionally, the lioness also plays well into the collection’s ideology and values of embracing female power, considering lionesses are known for working together in a group to hunt and take care of their cubs.
The collection spotlights three main silhouettes: gold hoops, a chain necklace, and a chain bracelet, all of which can be elevated with a removable Lioness pendant. The modular pieces can be purchased separately or in a complete set so you can customize your look from day to day, or even pair the items with other statement pieces from your personal jewellery collection.
Aurate aims to give back with this collection. For all purchases, 2 percent of the proceeds will go to Super Majority, a women’s activism organization that aims to ensure a more equitable future for women of all walks of life.
