Jonathan Van Ness, hairstylist and star of Netflix’s Queer Eye, has officially launched his own hair care line.

Called JVN, the brand was developed in partnership with biotechnology company Amyris and is both 100% vegan and cruelty-free. All JVN hair products are also colour-safe and free of silicone and sulfates.

The line was primarily formulated using hemi-squalane, a revolutionary ingredient created by Amyris that penetrates the hair shaft, allowing it to provide nourishment while simultaneously taming frizz and preserving colour. Hemi-squalane is a sustainable ingredient made from sugarcane and serves as a vegan and cruelty-free alternative to silicone or squalene, which are usually derived from animal sources, such as shark liver.

Other superstar ingredients from Van Ness’ first-ever hair care brand include camellia seed oil, amino acids, rice protein, caffeine, aloe leaf juice, moringa seed oil, and chia seed and linseed extract.

Further, all products are 90% natural or naturally derived and are housed inside sustainable packaging. For example, the packaging for JVN’s Complete Air Dry Cream is a recyclable aluminum tube with a post-consumer-recycled cap. Similarly, all shampoos and conditioners are packaged in aluminum bottles and feature post-consumer-recycled pumps.

Currently, JVN’s inaugural line consists of four categories of hair products, each designed with all genders and hair types in mind (inclusivity is one of JVN’s founding principles). The four categories are Nurture (for hydration, ideal for dry hair), Embody (for volumizing, ideal for fine hair), Undamage (for strengthening, ideal for overtreated hair), and Complete (a line of treatments and stylers to finish off your look).

Within each category, there is a range of products, including shampoo, conditioner, a deep moisture mask, a pre-wash scalp oil, an instant recovery serum, and an air dry cream.
