Customers in Canada will now be able to visit their local IKEA and order food in biodegradable take out containers with cutlery made from responsibly sourced wood.
This move follows IKEA Canada phasing out all single-use plastic straws last year and replacing them with paper straws as part of their ultimate goal of achieving a fully circular business by 2030.
“The world is changing rapidly and we know bold action is required to tackle the sustainability challenges we face,” said Michael Ward, CEO and chief sustainability officer at IKEA Canada. “Looking forward, we are committed to transforming the IKEA business to be ever more sustainable, including reimagining the lifecycle of our resources, dramatically reducing greenhouse gas emissions and inspiring and enabling our co-workers and customers to live a better everyday life within the means of the planet.”
Some of the takeout offerings include veggie balls, veggie hot dog, sustainably sourced salmon, the new strawberry vegan frozen treat, and more.
Not to mention, the COVID-19 pandemic has shifted eating habits with many now opting to order in or take out.
“We know that many of our customers look forward to an affordable family meal at the IKEA Restaurant when they visit our stores. We want to be there for our customers – whether they prefer to dine-in or takeout,” said Danielle Beauchesne, head of IKEA Food at IKEA Canada. “Our new Restaurant takeout option offers an easy way for Canadians to enjoy their IKEA favourites, however they choose to.”
