American accessories brand Fossil is celebrating Earth Day 2021 with the release of two new eco-friendly products.

The first is the Kier Cactus Leather Tote, an all-vegan tote bag made of cactus leather. Fossil says that cactus leather was chosen for the minimal water it requires to grow, saving an average of 7.5 litres of water per tote. In addition, the method of harvesting cacti is also sustainable, as the trunk is left intact for repeat harvesting with new leaves growing every six to eight months. Fossil’s Kier Cactus Leather Tote comes with a removable pouch and is large enough to fit a 15” laptop. It is currently available in four colourways: moss, black, brown, and wine.

The second product Fossil launched is the LE Solar Watch. Combining functionality with environmental sustainability, this new Fossil watch uses solar-powered technology and features five interchangeable straps made out of recycled plastic bottles. The colours of the five straps are pink, orange, yellow, green, and blue. To create the straps, roughly 16 recycled plastic water bottles were used, meaning 16 fewer plastic bottles that end up in a landfill. According to Fossil, the LE Solar Watch requires eight hours in the sun to be fully charged, after which it can last for up to three months without needing to be recharged.

Further, in honour of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, Fossil has partnered with EcoMatcher and through the organization, will be planting a tree for every LE Solar Watch sold.

The American brand has stated that these two new Earth Day releases are just one facet of their long-term commitment to environmental sustainability. Fossil’s Pro-Planet commitments currently include reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030, making all primary packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025, and completely eliminating virgin plastics from their supply chain by 2030.
