According to the Euromonitor International’s global packaging trends report, 480 billion plastic drinking bottles were sold globally in 2016 and this figure is estimated to increase to 583.3 billion by 2021. Seeking to change this reality by becoming part of the solution, Everlane has vowed to eliminate all virgin plastics from its supply chain by 2021 and has also launched a new collection of outerwear made from recycled plastic bottles.
Called ReNew, the outerwear collection consists of puffers, sweaters, parkas and fleeces that are made with around 15 to 60 recycled plastic bottles per garment.
“Plastic is poisoning our oceans, clogging landfills, and destroying the environment. There’s only one solution: Stop creating virgin plastic—and instead, renew what’s already here,” said Everlane Founder and CEO, Michael Preysman. “We believe businesses have to lead the way, so we’re starting today. We know we’re only a small piece of the global puzzle. But together, we can make a big impact. So let’s ditch the plastic where we can, and renew what’s already here. It won’t be easy. But things worth doing rarely are.”
To achieve a no plastic policy, Everlane is planning to replace all synthetic fabrics with renewed materials, replace all virgin plastic poly bags with renewed versions, and eliminate all single-use plastic from their offices and stores.
