Shadows of Light is a research project by designer Lotte Douwes that aims to develop sustainable materials for the creation of translucent porcelain.

In the mountains of Jingdezhen, China lies the key ingredient for creating translucent porcelain: a soft white clay called kaolin. Unfortunately, due to intensive mining, kaolin in recent years has become discoloured and impure.

Douwes was inspired to begin the project as a means of creating an alternative for kaolin.

As part of a work placement organized by Dusthack, Douwes went to Jingdezhen, the porcelain capital of the world, to realize her project.

“I design ceramic products with a strong focus on sustainability,” said Douwes. “I use aesthetic characteristics of ceramic waste as a tool to design products. I want to create a better future for ceramic industry and crafts. Instead of focussing on the end product only, I include every little step in the design process, from dust till it gets colour and shape or till it becomes waste again. I want to create impact with my designs and create something worthwhile. I believe this adds value to our lives and the products surrounding us.”
