After receiving many years of criticism from various animal rights groups, luxury parka maker Canada Goose recently announced it will stop purchasing fur by year-end and also pledged to be completely fur-free by the end of 2022.
Long known for its coyote fur-trimmed hoods, the brand had decided to stop manufacturing with its signature material to become more ethical.
President of HRC Retail Advisory, Farla Efros, says that with an increase in the number of vegans, it’s no surprise that the fashion industry is shifting to appeal to a much larger demographic.
In response to Canada Goose’s vow to go fur-free, PETA released a statement stating that it will be suspending its international campaigns against the company. PETA said it will now focus on encouraging Canada Goose to stop using feathers of geese and ducks.
Over the past few years, Canada Goose has tested out products with different eco-friendly materials. For instance, the Standard Expedition Parka was said to produce 30% fewer carbon emissions and requires 65% less water. Additionally, the brand’s new lines such as the fur-free Cypress and Crofton jackets are composed of recycled nylon. This is to decrease the use of virgin materials.
