Toronto-based outwear brand Canada Goose has long been critiqued for its lack of environmental friendliness and animal cruelty. However, in 2020, they have been working to change this perception by upping their sustainability game.

Back in April, the brand published a sustainable impact strategy plan that included goals such as becoming carbon neutral by 2025.

This past week, two additional steps were made in the right direction. The first was the introduction of Humanature, a new platform that is an amalgamate of the brand’s sustainability, ethics, and value-based initiatives. The second was the announcement of a new Canada Goose parka, hailed as their most sustainable parka to date, which is set to become available in January of 2021.

The jacket in question – the Standard Expedition Parka – is made from recycled and undyed fabric and features 100% responsibly sourced down and reclaimed fur. When compared to Canada Goose’ signature Expedition Parka, the new, eco-friendly iteration cuts down on carbon emissions by 30 percent.

Beyond simply creating the Standard Expedition Parka as a one-off exclusive, the Canadian company intends for this new winter jacket to pave the way for the future of all outwear they offer. They view this new parka as a benchmark not only for themselves, but also for the world.

Initiatives that are part of Humanature include two arts-centred programs. The first, In Residence, is a program where locals can express their communities by creating art installations inside Canada Goose retail stores, and the second is the Northern Arts project where nearly 300 works of art featuring Arctic Circle narratives are going to be displayed in stores across North America.

Further, a donation program where leftover Canada Goose fabrics and materials are donated and delivered to be upcycled to warranty programs is now in place. Finally, through Humanature, a Humanature Pass has been developed that gives Canada Goose staff the opportunity to spend one hour a week connecting with nature.
