UK-based fashion designer Bethany Williams recently made waves at London Fashion Week.

The annual event, which was presented virtually this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, gave Williams the ultimate platform to unveil her new gender-neutral capsule coat collection.

Williams’ coat collection features a line of trendy patchwork coats that were created out of vintage and antique wool blankets sourced from all over the United Kingdom. Specifically, the blankets were sourced from vintage sellers, ranging from those at antique markets to those at car boot sales. Williams is no stranger to upcycling, given that she exclusively works with organic or recycled materials.

One of the standout pieces from the collection uses wool from an expensive, Welsh-patterned blanket found at Sunbury Antiques Market at Kempton Racecourse.

With true sustainability in mind, coats have been finished with 100% organic cotton lining and handmade wooden buttons provided by Spencer Martin of London Green Wood, a not-for-profit cooperative that upcycles Hackney-grown waste or waste wood.

According to Williams, the capsule collection took inspiration from The Magpie Project, a charity that provides women and children under the age of five with temporary accommodation and gives a blanket to every baby born into the Magpie family. Thus, to Williams and so many others, a blanket is far more than a mere piece of fabric, but a symbol of comfort, shelter, and warmth, and she wanted to evoke that feeling in her latest collection.

Bethany Williams’ innovative coat collection is available now on Selfridges’ website, with prices ranging from $2,500 to $3,000 USD. 20% of the profits from the collection will be donated to The Magpie Project.
