Fashion retailer Zara has released the Join Life x TRF outerwear capsule collection that is made from 100% recycled and recyclable polyester fabric.

Created as part of a 2020 Circular Fashion System Commitment signed by Inditex, the parent company of Zara, the purpose of the commitment is to transition from the unsustainable linear textile system to a circular textile system by 2020. Other fashion brands that have signed the 2020 commitment include names such as H&M, Nike, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, and more.

With clothing being manufactured, bought, used, and discarded, the fashion industry under the current linear system has resulted in numerous negative environmental impacts where according to a report by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 73% of the world’s clothing in 2015 either ended up in a landfill and or was incinerated, with just 15% of clothes collected for recycling.

By implementing a circular textile system where all used fibres are collected, reused, and recycled, it will transform the textile industry from a producer of greenhouse gas emissions accounting for more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined to a sustainable and ethical business.

The Join Life collection is just one example of Zara’s 2020 commitment for the circular textile system. Among other strategies to advocate for sustainability, Zara has also implemented a service where unused clothing can be brought in-store to either be donated, recycled, and or transformed into new fabrics.
