To better serve the community as a whole, retailer Zappos has begun selling shoes as singles and in pairs of mixed sizes. Entitled ‘Single and Different Size Shoes Program’, the new program is catered for those with disabilities and specific needs.
Human beings are diverse in all aspects, including feet size. According to The Center for Foot Care, 80 percent of the population in the United States has a larger left foot that their right foot. Similar to how dominant arms can be bigger, whichever leg is used most can be larger than the other.
Rather than purchasing a pair of shoes where one foot fits snug and the other is either loose or tight, Zappos now allows for customers to individually pick the size of their right and left shoes for the perfect match.
For leg amputees, one may just require a single shoe so buying a pair would just be a waste of money. By purchasing a single shoe from Zappos, customers can save 50%.
Similar programs are on the rise. By 2023, it is said that the global market for customized clothing and footwear designed to meet the needs of people with disabilities and health conditions will grow to $349.9 billion, according to Coresight Research.
