Typically, the loofahs that you find on your local store shelves are made from plastic and other synthetic materials. When tossed after use, the loofahs often end up in landfills where it remains for hundreds of years. There is also the potential for microplastics that come off the loofah during use, which eventually make their way to ecosystems, causing significant environmental damage.
Offering a sustainable alternative is Kōv, a skincare company rooted in nature. Their loofahs are made from luffa, a cucumber-like plant grown in tropical and subtropical climates.
“Each luffa is a sun-dried gourd. Once dried, the skin is peeled off to reveal the sponge inside,” says Kōv. “Naturally soft when wet and compostable when you’re finished with it. Nature’s neat.”
