In a 2019 article, WIRED reported that coffee capsules are the most eco-friendly way of drinking espresso than any other method of making coffee. Well, Swiss company Migros has just conceived a new, innovative and more sustainable form of coffee consumption in the form of compostable coffee balls.

Globally, billions of aluminum and plastic coffee capsules end up in landfills every year, according to Newstalk. In 2018, Nespresso alone produced 12 billion capsules, and only 30% were estimated to be recycled. By using Migros’ CoffeeB system, the environmentally-harmful coffee pods are entirely eliminated.

Coated in a thin protective film made of raw materials from natural sources, the organic and Fairtrade-certified Coffee Ball is said to retain its full aroma and ensure an unparalleled coffee experience.

To brew the Coffee Ball, customers will need to purchase the patented CoffeeB Globe coffee machine. Just like conventional coffee pod machines, with just one press of a bottom, the CoffeeB Globe coffee machine will start brewing.

Designed with modular construction, the coffee machine can also be easily repaired at CoffeeB’s service centre.

Currently, CoffeeB offers espresso, lungo, ristretto, and decaffeinato to customers in Switzerland, France and Liechtenstein. Customers in the US and other countries are expected to be able to purchase CoffeeB in 2023.
