New York-based contemporary fashion brand Theory is stepping up their sustainable fashion game with the recent launch of their new “Good Collection”.
Theory’s Good Collection is made up of men’s and women’s clothing items that were produced using eco-friendly fibres.
“How we make our products is as important as what they are made of and their impact on the environment. We are especially proud that in addition to representing the exceptional quality that defines Theory, our newest fabrics are ethically sourced and developed in collaboration with fabric mills at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing,” reads the brand’s “Theory For Good” webpage.
Each item in the Good Collection is made from either Good Linen, Good Wool, or Good Cotton, and the website provides a detailed description of each.
First, Theory’s Good Linen is crafted from three fibres: organic linen, eco-conscious viscose made from cotton by-products, and partially recycled elastane for stretch. It is responsibly woven in Italy at the Marini mill, a family owned and operated fabric mill that was established in 1945. Linen is already a material that requires little irrigation, however, Theory has ensured that the Marini mill uses state of the art technology to further cut down on the amount of water used.
Second is Good Wool. According to Theory’s “Fabrics” webpage, Good Wool is premium merino wool that is 100 percent traceable to the farm it came from. Theory’s Good Wool is specifically sourced from farmers in Tasmania and South America. The brand only works with farms that have been able to prove that the animals in their care are well provided for. Further, the farms must adhere to strict land management and environmental conservation guidelines.
After being shipped from the farms, the wool is then woven at an eco-conscious Italian mill called the Tollegno 1900 mill. The Tollegno 1900 mill uses solar and wind energy powered by a nearby Alpine river. It also purifies all water used in the dyeing and finishing process and either returns it to its natural source or reuses it.
Finally, Good Cotton is Theory’s extra-long staple SUPIMA cotton, considered to be one of the longest-lasting cotton in the world. This cotton is sourced from eco-conscious American farms, such as the Boswell farm in California. The Boswell farm practices precision agriculture, which enables it to produce SUPIMA cotton using highly efficient techniques that maximize output while minimizing input.
After the uniquely durable cotton is harvested, it is then sent to the Albini mill in Bergamo, Italy. This mill is run by experts at energy conservation. In fact, the Albini mill recently sought to decrease its energy and water consumption and was successful, reducing its energy usage by 8,000,000 kWh and their water usage by 46,000 m3 per year.
Beyond the environmentally-friendly fabrics used in Theory’s new Good Collection line, the brand made another pledge relating to sustainability. Theory has publicly stated that they plan to make their signature textiles 100 percent traceable by 2025.
What exactly does this mean? In the next five years, Theory intends to only use fabric from fully traceable sources, ensuring that the sources of the textiles are as sustainable and ethical as possible. Currently, only Theory’s Good Wool and Good Cotton are traceable, Good Linen is not. However, all three are confirmed as ethically grown.
Beyond environmental sustainability, Theory’s Good Collection is modern and sophisticated in style. The women’s collection features perfectly tailored pantsuits in all colours of the rainbow, classic shift dresses, pencil skirts, and more. Meanwhile, the men’s collection includes everything from sporty wool bomber jackets to everyday button-down shirts.
