Ethical and eco-friendly beauty brand The Honest Company recently launched a new sustainable packaging initiative for their Honest Beauty line.
Founded by actress and entrepreneur Jessica Alba, Honest Beauty’s new packaging features 100% recyclable cartons that are made entirely out of tree-free paper sourced from upcycled agricultural waste (namely sugarcane by-product and corn husks).
Beyond the tree-free recyclable paper cartons, the brand has also replaced virgin plastic packaging with more environmentally responsible alternatives like glass droppers, aluminum tubes, tin compacts, post-consumer recycled plastics, and mono-material components where possible for hassle-free recycling.
The reason for these swaps is that each of these materials (glass, aluminum, tin) can be recycled indefinitely and require less energy to create. In addition, Honest Beauty states that not only are these materials more easily recyclable, but they have endless upcycling opportunities, such as saving empties for travel or planting small flowers and succulents in empty glass jars.
Honest Beauty’s Cleanout page has been updated to include a guide to beauty recycling, educating consumers on what product packaging materials to look for, how to disassemble packaging for proper recycling, and how to upcycle empty containers.
Honest Beauty debuted their new eco-friendly packaging alongside a new line of products, the Daily Defense Collection. This skincare collection was designed to defend skin against environmental aggressors that cause damage and ageing. The four new products were formulated with Sea Concentrate, which contains zinc and iron to provide a dose of essential minerals to the skin. The Daily Defense line is the first to be housed in the brand’s new sustainable packaging.
“From day one, we’ve placed the utmost importance on product efficacy, formula integrity and ingredient quality – packaging is the next step in our journey of continuous improvement,” says Alba. “As pioneers in clean beauty, I am energized that we are able to raise the standard for the industry at large, and demonstrate what is possible to achieve at scale while we continue to deliver on our mission to inspire everyone to love living consciously.”
The Honest Company’s new eco-friendly packaging and Daily Defense Collection are available now on the brand’s website.
