Hosted at The Beverly Hilton hotel, attendees of the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards were served a 100% plant-based dinner.
The decision to serve vegan was made by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). Composed of journalists and photographers who report on the television and film industry, HFPA is a nonprofit organization that co-produces the Golden Globe Awards.
“The climate crisis is impossible to ignore and after speaking with our peers, and friends in the community, we felt challenged to do better,” said Lorenzo Soria, president of HFPA, in a statement to CNN. “The decision to serve an entirely plant-based meal was embraced by our partners at the Beverly Hilton, and represents a small step in response to a big problem.”
The dinner began with a chilled golden beet soup topped with shaved candy-striped beets and pistachios as an appetizer before the main entree of king oyster mushroom “scallops” with wild mushroom risotto and roasted Brussels sprouts.
“Our talented culinary team is excited to create dynamic plant-based offerings for Hollywood’s best of the best,” said Matthew Morgan, The Beverly Hilton’s Executive Chef, in a statement to CNN.
When Joaquin Phoenix received his award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture for the critically acclaimed film Joker, he began his acceptance speech by thanking the HFPA for serving the plant-based dinner.
“First, I’d like the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing and acknowledging the link between animal agriculture and climate change,” said Phoenix. “It’s a very bold move making tonight plant-based, and it really sends a powerful message.”
Icelandic Glacial water was also offered in glass bottles as a means of reducing plastic waste. For those who needed a straw, a paper straw was available.
