Back in early 2021, fashion designer Stella McCartney created clothing made from lab-grown Mylo mushroom leather developed by California-based company Bolt Threads. Following this, McCartney continues to celebrate fungi with her summer 2022 collection.

Composed of various sustainable and ethically-made pieces such as dresses, tops, jumpsuits, and bags that feature colourful and psychedelic prints, the summer 2022 collection is said to evoke sensual femininity that encourages the redefining of sexiness.

Eco-friendly materials used in the collection include organic cotton, wood pulp-derived viscose, regenerated cellulose fabric cupro, and more. Most notably, Bolt Threads’ Mylo was used for Frayme Mylo, which McCartney claims is the world’s first-ever luxury bag crafted exclusively from vegan mycelium leather.

“If we want to save all our skins from the consequences of the climate and biodiversity crises, we need to stop fashion’s use of animal leather and furs,” says McCartney. “Mushrooms present a vegan alternative that can be grown regeneratively, renewably and quickly. How can you not be obsessed with these fantastic fungi.”
