Spanish fashion designer Sonia Carrasco has just launched her all-new spring-summer 2021 collection rooted in sustainability.

Typically, each of Carrasco’s collections aims to address a specific environmental issue (take her line titled “Plastic Island” as an example). However, she felt that there was too much going on in 2020 to take on just one issue, and so she named the latest collection “20-20.” As Carrasco sees it, the planet in 2020 gave us a wake-up call that cannot be ignored.

Where Carrasco’s new collection stands out from her past work is in the tailoring and knitwear, two areas the designer sought to showcase with this new line. 20-20 is rife with elegance, deconstructed silhouettes, and neutral, earthy hues livened up with splashes of deep orange. (The orange was used as a nod to the orange groves in Valencia, Spain, Carrasco’s hometown and where she spent the bulk of her time during the COVID-19 lockdown).

Largely made up of tailored pantsuits with a mix of artfully constructed blazers, fluid wide-legged trousers, and crepe skirts, the collection is made of sustainable materials such as hemp, raffia, recycled cotton, cupro, and recycled and organic thread. Further, like with past collections, all buttons and closures are made out of recycled polyester or recycled seed.

In addition to the materials used, Carrasco always makes sure that her manufacturing process has the smallest possible impact on the planet. That is why all aspects of her line, from design to material sourcing to manufacturing, are done locally in Spain. Further, for her 2021 collection Carrasco utilized new 3-D technologies in her design process. This technology helped save paper and textiles, both of which are commonly used for pattern and prototyping in the design stage.
