ballet rotoscope is an experimental short film created by Masahiko Sato and EUPHRATES that aims to express “new beauty by synthesizing various animations from above”.

The short film highlights the beautiful movements of ballet dancer Kurimu Urabe using rotoscope.

Invented by Max Fleischer in 1905, rotoscope is an animation technique that traces over motion picture footage. Through research, EUPHRATES states that rotoscope was rediscovered and developed from “a new point of view”.

“In ballet rotoscope, by extracting the movement of a dancing ballerina, we created an animation of locus drawn in the air, and dancing geometric figures, composed with a documentary picture,” said EUPHRATES. “Our aim was to represent a complete new type of beauty, by showing the interaction of abstract animation with realistic movements and documentary film.”
