One of the world’s largest jewellery brand, Pandora, has announced that by 2025, they will only use recycled gold and silver. This statement goes hand in hand with their vow to be an entirely carbon neutral company, across all operations, by the same year.

In a press release, CEO Alexander Lacik said, “Silver and gold are beautiful jewellery materials that can be recycled forever without losing their quality. Metals mined centuries ago are just as good as new. They will never tarnish or decay. We wish to develop a more responsible way of crafting affordable luxury like our jewellery and prevent that these fine metals end up in landfills. We want to do our part to build a more circular economy.”

Pandora currently uses 71% recycled silver and gold in their jewellery. However, increasing this to 100 percent will cut carbon emissions by two thirds for silver and by more than 99 percent for gold. Mining new metals use many natural resources and harm the environment. Therefore, by switching to fully recycled materials, a positive impact will also be made with water usage and other environmental factors. Pandora is renowned for its silver jewellery but also use gold, palladium, copper and man-made stones such as cubic zirconia. The new initiative will include the use of recycled forms of all of these metals going forward.

“The need for sustainable business practice is only becoming more important, and companies must do their part in response to the climate crisis and the depletion of natural resources. For many years Pandora has used recycled metals in our designs. Now we are ready to take the next step and stop using mined silver and gold altogether. This is a significant commitment that will be better for the environment and make our jewellery more sustainable,” said Lacik.

Only 15 percent of the world’s silver supply currently comes from recycled sources, much of which comes from the production of chemicals and electronics. Pandora has committed to working with suppliers to ensure they receive sufficient stock of recycled metals by following the guidance of the Responsible Jewellery Council‘s supply chain initiative.
