Since being co-founded by businessmen Johannes Quodt and Chris Wichert back in 2015, footwear brand Koio has been creating luxury and modern shoes with Italian craftsmanship that are designed for everyday wear.
Recently, Koio just launched its first vegan footwear initiative and material innovation lab called Pale Blue Dot.
The new vegan footwear label is named after a historical photograph of the same name taken in 1990 by NASA Voyager 1.
“We chose the name Pale Blue Dot because it reminds us of our goal—to preserve the Pale Blue Dot that we call home,” says Koio co-founder Quodt. “We hope it also inspires our customers to shop responsibly for Earth’s well-being.”
“Vegan materials have the potential to become better than any existing material in animal welfare, sustainability, function, and look over the next decade. Pale Blue Dot is the space where we transport footwear into the future and innovate on vegan materials so that they reach their potential,” adds Quodt.
As part of the launch of Pale Blue Dot, a sneaker called Vegan 01 has been released. Available in four colours, the Vegan 01 features an apple leather upper with soft recycled material lining, natural latex and cork insole, organic cotton laces, and a partially recycled rubber sole.
“We’re sourcing innovative vegan materials that are easy on the planet and offer a comfortable feel, great look, and high durability. Sustainable vegan materials are the future of footwear, and we’re excited for the world to experience them in our shoes,” says Koio co-founder Wichert.
