According to The Times of India, 2016 saw a total of 17.7 million two-wheeler vehicles sold in India. For some perspective, that’s roughly 48,500 units every single day.

Determined to capture and shake up the two-wheeler market is Ola, India’s largest mobility platform.

As part of its ambitious goals, Ola launched an electric vehicle arm called Ola Electric in 2019 and acquired Amsterdam-based electric scooter startup Etergo shortly after. Earlier this year, Ola Electric broke ground on a 43 acres two-wheeler factory powered by renewable energy that will be capable of producing 10 million units annually.

And just recently, the sleek Ola Scooter was unveiled to the delight of many. In fact, according to Electrek, over 100,000 people have put down a deposit for the new electric scooter. That being said, the deposit is only 499 INR ($6 USD).

To support the launch of the new electric scooter, Ola intends to build more than 100 thousand charging points in 400 cities throughout India as part of their Ola Hypercharger Network.

Ola’s charging stations will be state of the art with automated, multilevel charging and parking systems for optimal use of space and convenience. In addition, there will be standalone chargers installed in key locations such as malls. Customers will also have the ability to charge at home with a wall charger.

“At Ola Electric, our mission is to enable sustainable mobility for everyone,” says Ola CEO and co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal. “India can leapfrog problems of pollution and energy security by moving to electric mobility, create millions of new jobs and economic opportunity, and lead the world.”
