If you ever want to learn more about worker satisfaction and the behind-the-scenes of a company, look no further than the review section of job sites such as Indeed and Glassdoor. Unlike the carefully painted corporate image of happy workers smiling in social media posts, job reviews tell a different story.
On Indeed, a publicly-traded vegan fast-food company called Odd Burger stands out for a particular reason. It has a total of three reviews from previous workers, and all three are rated one star out of five.

According to an anonymous former worker who worked at Odd Burger’s Whitby location as a food server, the work environment was allegedly toxic.
“This workplace is just awful,” writes the former worker on Indeed. “Workers don’t get the proper amount of breaks. They don’t schedule enough workers and when it’s busy it can become extremely overwhelming with the amount of orders. They barely train you. The HR manager pretty much lied in the interview and said they care about their employees, and how ethical this company is but that’s false. Odd Burger exploits their employees.”
A former supervisor at the Whitby Location also accused Odd Burger of a toxic work environment.
“This was probably the worst company I have ever worked for,” writes the former supervisor on Indeed. “The management is horrible, the working conditions are unsafe and it just felt really unprofessional. You will be scheduled alone for your entire shift sometimes resulting in not being able to take any kind of break or even go to the bathroom, if you’re not able to take your break you still won’t get paid for it. If it gets extremely busy while you’re alone they expect you do just deal with it instead of trying to solve the issue.”
“Management does not care what you have to do as long as their store stays open. They don’t care if you’re sick (which is concerning because you’re literally handling peoples food) you will still have to work your shift because they refuse to hire more people. You will be assigned tasks that are above your pay grade and if you don’t do them correctly (weren’t trained) they get upset.”
It’s not just at Odd Burger’s restaurants. A former production worker at Odd Burger’s London manufacturing plant rated the company one star and claimed that everyone is overworked and underpaid.
“I gotta give it to the supervisors and fellow staff tho they are pretty good but upper management is brutal they underpay everyone. Gave me a raise a well-deserved one at that and it ended up matching everyone else so they were already underpaying me.”
On Glassdoor, Odd Burger additionally faces criticism about its sustainability.
“For a company that is committed to doing better, the recycling system needs to be improved. There is a lot of food waste and they don’t recycle plastic.” writes a former worker on Glassdoor.
“A lot of menu items get thrown away if they were made incorrectly or by mistake. I think it depends on the supervisor because sometimes they would be given free to the customer or would be offered to a staff member. But to see burgers thrown away because they have a little bit of ketchup on them for example, that seemed like such a waste to me. Especially when you see someone homeless nearby.”
