At I/O 2019, Google has introduced Nest Hub Max that is designed for “those shared places in the home where your family and friends gather”.

Nest Hub Max is a smart home control station. With users enabled to connect and control various compatible devices such as the Nest Hello video doorbell and Nest Learning Thermostat, the smart home can be controlled by touch, voice, and Quick Gestures from a single dashboard.

Featuring a 7” LCD touch screen with a rear-facing woofer for full stereo sound, Nest Hub Max can be used to for streaming HD video, viewing photos, playing music, and more. YouTube Music, Spotify and TuneIn are all available for free.

Fitted with Nest Cam, the Nest app can be used for monitoring, receiving notifications when motion and or an intruder is detected, enabling Home/Away Assist, and reviewing event history.

Utilizing Google Duo, high-quality video calls alongside video messages can be made. The wide-angle lens will automatically adjust to keep users centred in the frame.

Users will have the option of enabling Voice Match. By doing so, Nest Hub Max is able to recognize and respond specifically to a user’s voice. There is also the option of enabling Face Match. When users choose to utilize Face Match, an encrypted face model will be created and stored.

“Whenever you walk in front of the camera, Nest Hub Max recognizes you and shows just your information, not anyone else’s,” explained Rishi Chandra, Vice President of Product and General Manager, Google Home and Nest.

“So in the morning, when you walk into the kitchen, the Assistant knows to greet you with your calendar, commuting details, the weather, and other information you need to start your day,” noted Chandra. “And when you get home from work, Hub Max welcomes you home with reminders and messages that have been waiting for you. The Assistant offers personalized recommendations for music and TV shows, and you can even see who left you a video message.”

In regards to user privacy, Face Match’s facial recognition is processed locally with on-device machine learning so that camera data never leaves Nest Hub Max. There is a green light that indicates when the camera is streaming and a hardware switch can also be used to physically disables the microphone and camera.

Nest Hub Max is set to become available late summer for $229 on the Google Store and at other various certified stores.
