Fashion retailer MR PORTER has just launched a new capsule collection dubbed “Small World,” along with a new website category called “Craftsmanship Code.”

The multi-brand capsule collection is sustainable, with many featured items having been created with upcycled materials.

In total, there are over 200 different pieces in the Small Word capsule. Included are t-shirts, sweats, trench coats, shoes, accessories, and even lifestyle items, such as a recycled cotton throw, a porcelain incense holder, and ceramic dishware.

MR PORTER describes the Small World collection as being a celebration of craft and communities. The brands highlighted hail from all areas of the world, ranging from Tibet to Mexico to the UK.

Specifically, the MR PORTER Small World capsule is made up of 33 brands in total, each of which was chosen for its superior craftsmanship, small-batch manufacturing, and use of low-impact, recycled, and responsible materials.

For example, New York-based Double Eleven was selected for its commitment to repurposing and recycling military textiles that would otherwise end up in a landfill. In fact, one of the standout pieces in the Small World capsule is a reversible camouflage jacket by Double Eleven that was upcycled from a Belgian military tent dating back to 1956.

Meanwhile, Bornn, based in Istanbul, Turkey, specializes in creating traditional Turkish enamelware in order to have a positive social impact on their communities. One final example is Space Available, who crafts furniture and accessories using woven recycled plastic waste collected from Bali.

Each piece in the Small World collection is intended to represent MR PORTER’s Craftsmanship Code, a newly-launched product category on their website, meant to help shoppers make more conscious and mindful decisions.

MR PORTER’s Craftsmanship Code was created in collaboration with sustainability experts Create Sustain. To receive the retailer’s Craftsmanship Code stamp of approval the product must have been created by a brand that adheres to sustainable and ethical production practices and which has a positive social impact on their local communities.

Beyond the existing standards that all brands featured on MR PORTER must live up to, the Craftsmanship Code requires brands to meet additional criteria relating to the six key tenets of the code. These six tenets are; future crafts (such as the use of innovative technologies and materials like biomaterials made from waste), heritage craft (the use of time-honoured techniques like hand-weaving, embroidery, etc…), made to last longer, made locally, made with high standards of animal welfare, and made from considered materials.

Craftsmanship Code is ultimately a way for MR PORTER to champion more responsible brands. MR PORTER also noted that they are working towards making their own in-house label, Mr P., more sustainable and aim to have all pieces designed with sustainability and circularity in mind by 2025.
