Based out of Chicago, tech-startup Ovio has developed the world’s first smart food storage system called Smarterware.

With the goal of reducing food wastes by providing a way of monitoring the freshness of products, the Smarterware system is comprised of SmartTags and various accessories that enable users to count down the predetermined expiration date for each food item.

Capable of being affixed to virtually anything thanks to an adhesive gel backing, SmartTags use visible colour-coding to alert users of the freshness of a food item. With the colour indication having the same basic configuration as American traffic signals, green signifies fresh, yellow for an encroching expiry date, and red for expired.

“We designed our SmartTags to not only track food for notification purposes, but also to provide visual indicators to anyone in the household,” said Ovie co-founder and head of product design, Dave Joseph. “The color changing light ring was key in making it extremely easy for every member of the household to see what food is important to eat now.”

Capable of sending notifications to a user’s phone regarding the expiry date, recommend recipes based on the food item can also be sent via an app.

“We’re all about making your life simple. When you use Smarterware, planning meals will be so easy,” said Ovie co-founder and head of brand, Stacie Thompson. “Ovie will suggest what to make and even help you re-order if you’re out of any ingredients. Most Americans don’t know what they’re having for dinner at 4pm, but we think dinner is already in your fridge. So we want to help you find it!”

Smarterware is available to preorder and is set to begin shipping spring 2019.

“We’re so excited to get Smarterware into our customer’s hands in 2019,” said Ovie co-founder and CEO, Ty Thompson, “To know that we’ll be helping people make better meals at home with the ingredients they already have while also helping them to save over $2,000 every year is just amazing.”
