Microsoft HoloLens is the world’s first fully untethered, self-contained holographic computer that enables users to view and interact with holographic 3D dimension images without the need of any wires, external cameras, or phone or PC connection.

Featuring a transparent high-resolution holographic lens that uses an optical generation system to generate multidimensional images, HoloLens is equipped with advanced sensors to capture information regarding the environment and a custom holographic processing unit is embedded to understand the gesture commands the user has made.

Able to synthesize sound and enables spatial 3D hearing, four microphones inside the headset are used to pick up voice commands from users and a virtual assistant called Cortana is also featured to help with web searches, automated commands and prompts.

With a battery life of 2-3 hours and up to two weeks of standby time, HoloLens is passively cooled without the need of any fans and is fully functional while charging.

Utilizing a mixed reality application called Dynamic 360 remote assist, an on-screen video call system can be used to connect with remote workers, see their environment and proffer solutions. The Dynamic 365 layout enables architects and designers to import and interact with 3D models as holograms in the physical world or in virtual reality, enabling designers to move past from just viewing traditional blueprints to interacting with them in context before committing to production.

The significance of the HoloLens is far-reaching and varied across multiple industries such as design, aviation, medical, construction, education, manufacturing, and more.

Microsoft HoloLens can be purchased as either a Development Edition, where developers can collaborate and integrate more applications for the HoloLens and or as a Commercial Suite configuration that companies can utilize to build their own software and customize the device to their specific needs.
