Designed and developed by Brooklyn based studio BREAKFAST, Brixel Mirror is a kinetic art installation made of rotating bricks called Brixels.

The 18-by-six-foot installation was created to showcase the several capabilities and functions of Brixels technology.

Acting as pixels on an image, Brixels are controlled by a proprietary software. Using a smartphone app to switch between various modes of the installation such as silhouette, a mirror image of the person standing in front is created with the positive and negative colours of the rotating Brixels. The installation can also form kinetic animations and texts.

“We saw an opportunity to blur the lines between what is deemed art, infrastructure, and a digital display,” said BREAKFAST Head of Design and Co-Founder, Andrew Zolty. “We sought to develop a new medium that would allow us to create a variety of captivating installations that are, at first, perceived as art, and second, deliver relevant information and unique experiences.”

Available in customizable shapes, materials and colours, Brexils can be used in various applications such as dynamic sculptures, walls, railings, facades and more.

According to Zolty, Brixels have garnered interest from a variety of high-profile entities from around the world, including a number of brands, architecture groups and museums.

“We can’t yet speak to any in detail but hope to reveal some of the projects and exhibitions soon,” said Zolty.

Within the year, BREAKFAST hopes to produce three to five unique Brixel installations that stand as one-of-a-kind pieces.

“Our continued goal is to put out mesmerizing installations that allow a new way to present and interact with digital content that isn’t a glowing rectangle,” added Zolty.
