London-based luxury fashion brand Mother of Pearl just dropped a new sustainable collection in collaboration with John Lewis.

The collection was launched on Earth Day as a nod to the importance of adhering to rigorous ethical design standards in fashion. Not only is the edit Mother of Pearl’s first high street collection, but it is also entirely eco-friendly.

“Making beautiful pieces for the high street with the most sustainable fabrics and production is not an easy task, but working with the John Lewis & Partners team has made this a reality,” said Amy Powney, Mother of Pearl’s creative director.

John Lewis is a brand of high-end department stores in the UK. There are 50 John Lewis department stores in total, however, all are temporarily closed at the moment due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mother of Pearl has been committed to sustainability from the beginning, but this new edit takes its mission a step further. Every single item in the eco-friendly capsule collection is made entirely of either Tencel or organic cotton.

Tencel is a fabric made from wood fibres. However, these aren’t just any regular wood fibres. Rather, all Tencel fabric is derived from renewable wood sources found in sustainably managed forests. The material has been certified as both biodegradable and compostable. This means that when you’re finished with a Mother of Pearl item made of Tencel, you can bury it in your garden and it will break down and become one with nature.

Further, Mother of Pearl has ensured that each item was produced with a low carbon footprint and with responsible use of water. This means that a very short travel distance was used in the making of the garment and that the garment was either created using less water than what is considered normal or did not pollute any water during production.

Beyond sustainability, the 28-piece collection by Mother of Pearl is as stylish as it is eco-friendly. The collection blends the elegant, modern aesthetic of Mother of Pearl with the more affordable pricing offered by John Lewis. Consumers can expect to find wearable pieces, ranging from flowy shirt dresses and silk blouses to knotted sandals and maxi skirts. Trendy details embellish many of the garments, such as pleats, fringe, oversized cuffs, and of course, pearls. As a homage to the planet, the colour scheme of the collection is blue and white.

In line with this collection, Mother of Pearl recently launched a #FashionForFuture social media campaign, designed to inspire people (including celebrities and influencers) to change their consumption habits when it comes to fashion.

According to Powney, the goal is for Mother of Pearl to “create without compromise”. That is why the majority of the fabric they use is recycled. In fact, only 5 percent of its Summer 2020 collection is made of synthetic fabrics.
