Although 1 in 10 women deal with hirsutism, few razor brands focus specifically on female facial shaving. Defined as excess terminal hair growth (often on the face, chest and back), the effects of hirsutism are even more pronounced in women with coarse hair textures. Shaving as a method to deal with hirsutism has long been a controversial topic.

A few misconceptions are to blame for this controversy. Firstly, female facial shaving has been claimed to cause faster hair growth. Secondly, potential shavers are often wary of hair growing back thicker when they shave. Admittedly, the hair that grows back is blunter, and this contributes to its thicker appearance (especially when hairs are still very short). Once hairs are allowed to grow out fully, they will be thinner and more similar to pre-shaven hairs.

Founded by beauty influencer Megan Carboney, Jill is working to demystify the process of female facial shaving by educating and providing the necessary tools.

The brand offers a starter kit, which includes a handle and two detachable blade heads that are recyclable. Customers can sign up to Jill’s subscription service for refill blades delivered on a monthly basis.

Aside from removing hair, facial shaving has a few other benefits. When done correctly, it can be a powerful exfoliator. The process of exfoliation allows for skincare products to seep into the skin better, and makeup application can be more seamless on exfoliated skin.
