If chic, sustainable jewellery is your thing, then you’re going to love J. Hannah.
The Los Angeles-based brand has quickly made a name for itself owing to its ethical, eco, and on-trend styles.
“Alongside quality, practicing sustainability is a top priority and cornerstone of J. Hannah, and we take a thoughtful and holistic approach to the many points of consideration that help a business be more sustainable. ‘Sustainability’ must be defined to hold weight, and our customers deserve to know exactly what we mean when we use this word. It is a practice and as such, an ongoing effort — something we are always actively striving for –– not a definitive marker of achievement,” reads the brand’s website.
For J. Hannah, sustainability is rooted in a few key principles, such as producing locally and minimizing waste. The brand, along with its founder, Jess Hannah Révész, are based in Los Angeles, and that is where all of their pieces are manufactured. J. Hannah exclusively works with vetted, family-owned and operated manufacturers in downtown LA.
What they make their jewellery out of is also sustainable. For example, J. Hannah uses 100% recycled diamonds in any of their jewellery that features the popular gem. For their jewellery that does not use recycled gemstones or metals, they make a point of only working with mines, manufacturers, and lapidaries where safe working conditions and fair compensation is upheld. The brand acknowledges that there are very few certifications or standards in this industry, and so they take it upon themselves to decipher what terms like “recycled” or “ethically sourced” translate to for each individual supplier.
In addition to the diamonds, all of the casting grain used in J. Hannah pieces are made from 100% post-consumer recycled materials. This means that the precious metals they use are sourced from old jewellery or scrap gold, which have been combined and turned into beautiful new jewellery. The result is silver or gold on par with that that comes directly from a mine, but without the negative environmental and ethical consequences.
Further, J. Hannah strives to be as eco-friendly as possible when it comes to the production process. That is why all water and trace metals from the refining process, and all wax used in the moulding and casting process that are leftover are saved and either reused or recycled.
