As part of Sony‘s startup acceleration program, a small device called REON POCKET capable of both heating and cooling has been developed.

Made to fit into an upper back pocket of a specially made T-shirt, REON POCKET is designed for those wearing formal business attire. Thanks to its compact size, the 85-gram device is unnoticeable when wearing a dress shirt overtop.

According to Sony, the body surface temperature of REON POCKET users can be heated 8 degrees Celsius (about 14 degrees Fahrenheit) and cooled 13 degrees Celsius (23 degrees Fahrenheit).

“Reduce the discomfort due to various temperatures such as hot summer outings, crowded train heat, winter cold outings, etc,” said Sony.

Connected to an IOS and Android compatible app via Bluetooth, users will be able to set their desired temperature.

With a battery life of 24 hours, the device charges in 2 hours using a USB-C.

Currently available for purchase on Sony’s crowdfunding and e-commerce website called First Flight, REON POCKET is scheduled to be delivered March 2020.

“People are focusing on ‘functionality’ and ‘comfort’,” said REON POCKET project lead Yoichi Ito. “REON POCKET delivers comfort to business people working in suits. However, we are looking into the future that is not only that. The comfort of the individual’s temperature environment should lead to the reduction of energy consumption in the whole space in the future. In that way, I would like to contribute to the global environment.”

“We can leave a better global environment for the current young generation,” added Yoichi.
