At the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, Honda has unveiled a production model of an urban electric vehicle called Honda e Prototype.

Based on the 2017 Urban EV Concept, the e Prototype is part of Honda’s electric vision to have two-thirds of European sales be comprised of hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery electric and fuel cell vehicles by 2025.

Featuring a rear-wheel-drive platform with a range of 200 km, a fast charge function can be used for an 80% battery charge in 30 minutes.

“The first compact Honda car on a dedicated EV platform delivers a blend of efficiency, performance and usability that is perfect for urban environments,” said Honda in a press release. “On the road, the driving dynamics are focused on delivering a fun and emotive experience, with the powerful electric motor driven through rear wheels for next-generation small-car performance.”

Described by Honda as being distinctive, contemporary, minimalist and clean, the e Prototype is designed for those with modern lifestyles in cities.

“There are many manufacturers out there that are trying to squeeze so much into the design of their new cars,” said Exterior Design Chief Ken Sahara. “Crazy character lines, crazy surfaces and crazy detail seem to be everywhere. The Honda Urban EV Concept was a reaction to that. It is a study into simplistic design.”

Fitted with a panoramic windscreen, pop out door handles and cameras that replace traditional side view mirrors, Honda states that the e Prototype was designed with “a focus on functionality & purpose featuring a simplicity of design with unique character.”

“We always intended the e Prototype to feel like a premium product. This is reflected in elements like the frameless doors and the materials used in and around the car,” said Sahara. “We have stripped everything back and have focused on very simple lines and shapes. This design might not feature in the next CR-V or Jazz, but I feel that Honda is generally heading towards much simpler design for future models.”

The interior is relaxed and spacious with a modern cabin. There is also a dual-screen horizontal display that features intelligent applications and services.

“We focused heavily on the app development for this infotainment system, and we wanted to make it as easy and as accessible to users as possible.” said lead interior designer Akinori Myoui.
